Because the heat is concentrated it reaches extremely high temperatures, and so produces a lot more power than would be the case with an equivalent surface area of photovoltaic panels. This technology works on the sun's heat, not its light, which is what photovoltaic cells use. Therefore it is perfect for desert areas that are located between the tropics.

the many different solar technologies are compared and discussed in this good Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_powerDavidKThorpehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04215770376688861114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18727745.post-21623991050328354632008-05-07T20:01:00.000+01:002008-05-07T20:01:00.000+01:00Hi David. If so, is it more efficient than just passively receiving the energy on a flat panel and coverting it to electricity?brizzlebenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13479839888986645182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18727745.post-41024269344446523382007-11-12T16:52:00.000+00:002007-11-12T16:52:00.000+00:00Yes I did mean trough - will correct - I'm hopeles...Yes I did mean trough - will correct - I'm hopeless at proofreading, sorry!DavidKThorpehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04215770376688861114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18727745.post-86211740152069849692007-11-12T16:43:00.000+00:002007-11-12T16:43:00.000+00:00Should"parabolic through mirrors"read"parabolic tr...Should

"parabolic through mirrors"

read

"parabolic trough mirrors" here?

That's likely what was intended, from my recollection of the design.
________________________________
Nitpicking, a gesture of respectHank Robertshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07521410755553979665noreply@blogger.com
